Research Interests

It is my aim to integrate scholarly approaches to music research using ethnographic and empirical methodologies in an attempt to further elucidate the interactions between social and cultural practices, environment, biology, and cognition, all of which operate in an emergent process of musical experience and understanding. Some of my research interests include embodied music cognition; the biology and psychology of music, emotion, and memory; rhythm and entrainment; music's role in the construction and negotiation of identity and social change in Carnival/Festival traditions; the phenomenology of music and movement in public urban spaces, existential ethnomusicology, and the politics and poetics of brass street band performance.
